1 Timothy 5:23

Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities.

a. ASV: Be no longer a drinker of water, but use a little wine for thy stomach’s sake and thine often infirmities.

  

b. YLT: No longer be drinking water, but a little wine be using, because of thy stomach and of thine often infirmities;

d. Amplified Bible Classic:Drink water no longer exclusively, but use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent illnesses.

1. “Drink no longer water…”

a. [Drink] no longer [Strong: 3371 mēkéti, may-ket'-ee; from G3361 and G2089; no further:—any longer, (not) henceforth, hereafter, no henceforward (longer, more, soon), not any more.]

b. water [Strong: 5202 hydropotéō, hoo-drop-ot-eh'-o; from a compound of G5204 and a derivative of G4095; to be a water-drinker, i.e. to abstain from vinous beverages:—drink water.]

2. “...but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities.”

a. but [Strong: 235 allá, al-lah'; neuter plural of G243; properly, other things, i.e. (adverbially) contrariwise (in many relations):—and, but (even), howbeit, indeed, nay, nevertheless, no, notwithstanding, save, therefore, yea, yet.]

b. use [Strong: 5530 chráomai, khrah'-om-ahee; middle voice of a primary verb (perhaps rather from G5495, to handle); to furnish what is needed; (give an oracle, "graze" (touch slightly), light upon, etc.), i.e. (by implication) to employ or (by extension) to act towards one in a given manner:—entreat, use.]

c. [a] little [Strong: 3641 olígos, ol-ee'-gos; of uncertain affinity; puny (in extent, degree, number, duration or value); especially neuter (adverbially) somewhat:—+ almost, brief(-ly), few, (a) little, + long, a season, short, small, a while.]

1). The use of “little” matches all the other mentions of wine. In this case Paul said a little so that Timothy would not get drunk.

a). Romans 14:21-23 It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak.

14:22 Hast thou faith? have it to thyself before God. Happy is he that condemneth not himself in that thing which he alloweth.

14:23 And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.

d. wine [Strong: 3631 oînos, oy'-nos; a primary word (or perhaps of Hebrew origin (H3196)); "wine" (literally or figuratively):—wine.]

k. often [Strong: 4437 pyknós, pook-nos'; from the same as G4635; clasped (thick), i.e. (figuratively) frequent; neuter plural (as adverb) frequently:—often(-er).]

l. infirmities [Strong: 769 asthéneia, as-then'-i-ah; from G772; feebleness (of mind or body); by implication, malady; morally, frailty:—disease, infirmity, sickness, weakness.]
