Hebrews 4:8

Hebrews 4:8

For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day.

a. ASV: For if Joshua had given them rest, he would not have spoken afterward of another day.
  
b. YLT: For if Joshua had given them rest, He would not concerning another day have spoken after these things;
d. Amplified Bible Classic: [This mention of a rest was not a reference to their entering into Canaan.] For if Joshua had given them rest, He [God] would not speak afterward about another day.
1. “For if Jesus had given them rest…”

a. For [Strong: 1063 gár, gar; a primary particle; properly, assigning a reason (used in argument, explanation or intensification; often with other particles):—and, as, because (that), but, even, for, indeed, no doubt, seeing, then, therefore, verily, what, why, yet.]
b. if [Strong: 1487 ei, i; a primary particle of conditionality; if, whether, that, etc.:—forasmuch as, if, that, (al-)though, whether. Often used in connection or composition with other particles, especially as in G1489, G1490, G1499, G1508, G1509, G1512, G1513, G1536, G1537.]
c. Jesus [Strong: 2424 Iēsoûs, ee-ay-sooce'; of Hebrew origin (H3091); Jesus (i.e. Jehoshua), the name of our Lord and two (three) other Israelites:—Jesus.]

1). D.C. This actually referring to Joshua. In Hebrews 4:7, the writer of Hebrews was referring to the 40 year wandering in the desert and then mentions the leader after that which would be Joshua.

1). Albert Barnes Commentary: For if Jesus - Margin, "That is, Joshua." The Syriac renders it, "Joshua the son of Nun." "Jesus" is the Greek mode of writing "Joshua," and there can be no doubt that Joshua is here intended. The object is to prove that Joshua did" not" give the people of God such a rest as to make it improper to speak of a "rest" after that time. "If Joshua had given them a complete and final rest; if by his conducting them to the promised land all had been done which had been contemplated by the promise, then it would not have been alluded to again, as it was in the time of David." Joshua "did" give them a rest in the promised land; but it was not all which was intended, and it did not exclude the promise of another and more important rest. Then would he not - Then "God" would not have spoken of another time when that rest could be obtained. The "other day" here referred to is that which is mentioned before by the phrase "today," and refers to the time in which it is spoken of long after Joshua, to wit, in the time of David.

2). Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown Commentary: Answer to the objection which might be made to his reasoning, namely, that those brought into Canaan by Joshua (so "Jesus" here means, as in Act 7:45) did enter the rest of God. If the rest of God meant Canaan, God would not after their entrance into that land, have spoken (or speak [ALFORD]) of another (future) day of entering the rest.

d. e. rest [Strong: 2664 katapaúō, kat-ap-ow'-o; from G2596 and G3973; to settle down, i.e. (literally) to colonize, or (figuratively) to (cause to) desist:—cease, (give) rest(-rain).]
  
2.  “...then would he not afterward have spoken of another day."

a. then [Strong: 302  án, an; a primary particle, denoting a supposition, wish, possibility or uncertainty:—(what-, where-, wither-, who-)soever. Usually unexpressed except by the subjunctive or potential mood.]

i. day [Strong: 2250 hēméra, hay-mer'-ah; feminine (with G5610 implied) of a derivative of ἧμαι hēmai (to sit; akin to the base of G1476) meaning tame, i.e. gentle; day, i.e. (literally) the time space between dawn and dark, or the whole 24 hours (but several days were usually reckoned by the Jews as inclusive of the parts of both extremes); figuratively, a period (always defined more or less clearly by the context):—age, +alway, (mid-)day (by day, (-ly)), + for ever, judgment, (day) time, while, years.]
