2 Corinthians 5:21
For he hath made him to be
sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in
him.
a. NLT:
For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so
that we could be made right with God through Christ.
b. NIV:
God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might
become the righteousness of God.
c. YLT:
for him who did not know sin, in our behalf He did make sin, that we may become
the righteousness of God in him.
d.
Amplified Bible: He made Christ who knew no sin to [judicially] be sin on our
behalf, so that in Him we would become the righteousness of God [that is, we
would be made acceptable to Him and placed in a right relationship with Him by
His gracious lovingkindness].
e.
Worrell Translation: Him Who knew no sin He made to be sin on our behalf, that
we may become God’s righteousness in Him.
1. “For he hath made him
to be sin for us…”
a. For
[1063 * gar] [Strong: a primary particle; properly, assigning a reason (used in
argument, explanation or intensification; often with other particles):--and,
as, because (that), but, even, for, indeed, no doubt, seeing, then, therefore,
verily, what, why, yet.]
b. he
hath made [4160 * poieo] [Strong: apparently a prolonged form of an obsolete
primary; to make or do (in a very wide application, more or less
direct):--abide, + agree, appoint, X avenge, + band together, be, bear, +
bewray, bring (forth), cast out, cause, commit, + content, continue, deal, +
without any delay, (would) do(-ing), execute, exercise, fulfil, gain, give,
have, hold, X journeying, keep, + lay wait, + lighten the ship, make, X mean, +
none of these things move me, observe, ordain, perform, provide, + have purged,
purpose, put, + raising up, X secure, shew, X shoot out, spend, take, tarry, +
transgress the law, work, yield.]
c. to
be sin [266 * hamartia] [Strong: from 264; a sin (properly abstract):--offence,
sin(-ful).]
d. for
[5228 * huper] [Strong: a primary preposition; "over", i.e. (with the
genitive case) of place, above, beyond, across, or causal, for the sake of,
instead, regarding; with the accusative case superior to, more than:--(+
exceeding, abundantly) above, in (on) behalf of, beyond, by, + very chiefest,
concerning, exceeding (above, -ly), for, + very highly, more (than), of, over,
on the part of, for sake of, in stead, than, to(-ward), very. In the
comparative, it retains many of the above applications.]
e. us
[2257 * hemon] [Strong: genitive case plural of 1473; of (or from)
us:--our (company), us, we.]
1). Jesus was
made our sin, not just bare our sin, He became our sin.
a). 1
Peter 2:24 “Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree…”
b).
Isaiah 53:6 “…and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.”
2). Jesus gave
us the perfect illustration of his substitutionary death on the cross from the
Torah.
a).
John 3:14, 15 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so
must the Son of man be lifted up:
3:15 That
whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
3). Jesus was
referring to the incident in Numbers where Israel was grumbling about God.
a).
Numbers 21:4-9 And they journeyed from
mount Hor by the way of the Red sea, to compass the land of Edom: and the soul
of the people was much discouraged because of the way.
21:5 And
the people spake against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us
up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no bread, neither is
there any water; and our soul loatheth this light bread.
21:6 And
the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and
much people of Israel died.
21:7 Therefore
the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against
the LORD, and against thee; pray unto the LORD, that he take away the serpents
from us. And Moses prayed for the people.
21:8 And
the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole:
and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon
it, shall live.
21:9 And
Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass,
that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he
lived.
4). Why would
God give us a picture comparing Jesus, the righteous Son of God to a serpent, a
symbol of evil? Because that is what happened on the cross, Jesus became our
sin, that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him.
2. “…who knew no sin…”
a. who [3588 *

(have) know(-ledge), perceived, be resolved, can speak, be sure, understand.]
c. no [3361 * me]
[Strong: a primary particle of qualified negation (whereas 3756 expresses an
absolute denial); (adverb) not, (conjunction) lest; also (as an interrogative
implying a negative answer (whereas 3756 expects an affirmative one))
whether:--any but (that), X forbear, + God forbid, + lack, lest, neither,

though he was tempted to sin in every way we are.
a).
Hebrews 2:17, 18 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his
brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining
to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.
2:18 For
in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that
are tempted.
b).
Hebrews 4:15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the
feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet
without sin.
3. “…that we might be made
the righteousness of God in him.”
a. that [2443
* hina] [Strong: probably from the same as the former part of 1438 (through the
demonstrative idea; compare 3588); in order that (denoting the purpose or the
result):--albeit, because, to the intent (that), lest, so as, (so) that, (for)
to.]

act); specially (Christian) justification:--righteousness.]
e. of God
[2316 * theos] [Strong: of uncertain affinity; a deity, especially (with 3588)
the supreme Divinity; figuratively, a magistrate; by Hebraism, very:--X
exceeding, God, god(-ly, -ward).]
f. in [1722 *
en] [Strong: a primary preposition denoting (fixed) position (in place, time or
state), and (by implication) instrumentality (medially or constructively), i.e.
a relation of rest (intermediate between 1519 and 1537); "in," at,
(up-)on, by, etc.:--about, after, against, + almost, X altogether, among, X as,

rarely with verbs of motion, and then not to indicate direction, except
(elliptically) by a separate (and different) preposition.]
g. him [846 *
autos] [Strong: from the particle au (perhaps akin to the base of 109 through
the idea of a baffling wind) (backward); the reflexive pronoun self, used
(alone or in the comparative 1438) of the third person , and (with the proper
personal pronoun) of the other persons:--her, it(-self), one, the other, (mine)
own, said, (self-), the) same, ((him-, my-, thy- )self, (your-)selves, she,
that, their(-s), them(-selves), there(-at, - by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with),
they, (these) things, this (man), those, together, very, which.]
1). We are
made the righteousness of God when we believe and accept what God did for us in
Christ on the cross.
a).
Romans 4:3-5 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was
counted unto him for righteousness.
4:4 Now
to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.
4:5 But
to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his
faith is counted for righteousness.
b).
Romans 3:21, 22 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested,
being witnessed by the law and the prophets;
3:22 Even
the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon
all them that believe: for there is no difference:
2). During the
millennial Kingdom and beyond into eternity it will be recognized that the
source of our righteousness is Jesus.
a).
Jeremiah 23:5-8 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto
David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute
judgment and justice in the earth.
23:6 In
his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his
name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.
23:7 Therefore,
behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that they shall no more say, The LORD
liveth, which brought up the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt;
23:8 But,
The LORD liveth, which brought up and which led the seed of the house of Israel
out of the north country, and from all countries whither I had driven them; and
they shall dwell in their own land.
