Acts 14:4



Acts 14:4

But the multitude of the city was divided: and part held with the Jews, and part with the apostles.

a. NLT: But the people of the town were divided in their opinion about them. Some sided with the Jews, and some with the apostles.

b. NIV: The people of the city were divided; some sided with the Jews, others with the apostles.

c. YLT: And the multitude of the city was divided, and some were with the Jews, and some with the apostles,

1. “But the multitude of the city was divided…

a. But [Strong: 1161 * de deh a primary particle (adversative or continuative); but, and, etc.:--also, and, but, moreover, now (often unexpressed in English).]

b. the [Strong: to from 3588 * ho ho, including the feminine he hay, and the neuter to to in all their inflections; the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom):--the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc.]

c. multitude [Strong: 4128 * plethos play'-thos from 4130; a fulness, i.e. a large number, throng, populace:--bundle, company, multitude.

d. of the city [Strong: 4172 * polis pol'-is probably from the same as 4171, or perhaps from 4183; a town (properly, with walls, of greater or less size):--city.]

e. was divided [Strong: 4977 * schizo skhid'-zo apparently a primary verb; to split or sever (literally or figuratively):--break, divide, open, rend, make a rent.]

2. “…and part held with the Jews, and part with the apostles.”

a. and [Strong: 2532 * kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

b. part [Strong: 3303 * men men a primary particle; properly, indicative of affirmation or concession (in fact); usually followed by a contrasted clause with 1161 (this one, the former, etc.):--even, indeed, so, some, truly, verily. Often compounded with other particles in an intensive or asseverative sense.]

c. held [Strong: 2258 * en ane imperfect of 1510; I (thou, etc.) was (wast or were):--+ agree, be, X have (+ charge of), hold, use, was(-t), were.]

d. with [Strong: 4862 * sun soon a primary preposition denoting union; with or together (but much closer than 3326 or 3844), i.e. by association, companionship, process, resemblance, possession, instrumentality, addition, etc.:--beside, with. In composition it has similar applications, including completeness.]
