And when Silas and Timotheus were come from Macedonia, Paul was pressed in the spirit, and testified to the Jews that Jesus was Christ.

1). In 1 Thessalonians 3:1-7 Paul is giving details about his first visit to Thessalonica that are not mentioned in Acts 17. In Acts 17 Paul and his company came to Thessalonica to preach the gospel and establish a church. However, after three weeks they were run out of town by Jews who were opposed the gospel (Acts 17:1-10). They (the whole team) then went to Berea where they and the gospel were received much more readily (Acts 17:10-12). But the Jews of Thessalonica heard they were preaching in Berea and came down and stirred up opposition to it (Acts 17:13). Paul was then ushered out of Berea and taken to Athens, but Silas and Timothy stayed in Berea (Acts 17:14.) When Paul got to Athens he told those who had brought him there to tell Silas and Timothy to come to him in Athens as soon as possible (Acts 17:15). In Acts 17:16 we see Paul waiting for Silas and Timothy in Athens. What we learn in 1 Thessalonians 3 is that Silas and Timothy do arrive in Athens. 1 Thessalonians 2:17, 18 relates how Paul told the Thessalonian church that he wanted desperately to get back to them but the enemy prevented it. It is here we pick up 1 Thessalonians 3. Paul tells them instead of going himself he stayed in Athens and sent Silas and Timothy to comfort them in their faith (1 Thessalonians 3:1, 2). While Silas and Timothy go to Thessalonica, Paul experiences the uproar in Athens on Areopagus/Mars Hill (Acts 17:16-34). After that he leaves Athens for Corinth where Silas and Timothy eventually rejoin him in Corinth (Acts 18:1-5).

b). [NIV] When Silas and Timothy came from Macedonia, Paul devoted himself exclusively to preaching, testifying to the Jews that Jesus was the Messiah.


c). [ASV] But when Silas and Timothy came down from Macedonia, Paul was constrained by the word, testifying to the Jews that Jesus was the Christ.


2). The reason for the differences in the translations, especially between the KJV and the NLT, NIV, ASV is because they use a different Greek text and in the text they use the Greek word is “logos”, whereas in the KJV it is “pneuma”. Hence, in the ASV it is “constrained by the word” and in the KJV it is “pressed or constrained in the spirit.” Both I think can be used because when Paul came from Athens to Corinth, he was determined to preach Christ Jesus crucified.


a). 1 Corinthians 2:1-5 And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God.

2:2 For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.

2:3 And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling.

2:4 And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:

2:5 That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.


3). Some have taught that [in their eyes] Paul’s less than successful time in Athens caused him to refocus away from a philosophical approach to a strictly Scriptural approach.


a). William Ramsay, Saint Paul The Traveler And Roman Citizen, “It would appear that Paul was disappointed and perhaps disillusioned by his experience in Athens. He felt that he had gone at least as far as was right in the way of presenting his doctrine in a form suited to the current philosophy; and the result had been little more than naught. When he went on from Athens to Corinth, he no longer spoke in the philosophical style. In replying afterwards to the unfavorable comparison between his preaching and the more philosophical style of Apollos, he told the Corinthians that, when he came among them, he “determined not to know anything save Jesus Christ, and him crucified” (1 Corinthians 2:2); and nowhere throughout his writings is he so hard on the wise, the philosophers, and the dialecticians, as when he defends the way in which he had presented Christianity at Corinth. Apparently the greater concentration of purpose and simplicity of method in his preaching at Corinth is referred to by Luke, when he  says that when Silas and Timothy rejoined him there, they found him wholly possessed by and engrossed in the word.”  


b). I personally do not agree with this account. I believe Paul was led by the Spirit to present the gospel to a culture that did not have a familiarity with anything that was truly godly. Paul wrote in this same epistle his “philosophy” when coming into contact with various cultures. I believe the following words reflect well why he ministered the way he did in Athens.


c). 1 Corinthians 9:19-23 For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more.

9:20 And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law;

9:21 To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law.

9:22 To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.

9:23 And this I do for the gospel's sake, that I might be partaker thereof with you.


3. “...and testified to the Jews that Jesus was Christ.”
