Genesis 22:5

 

And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you.

1. “And Abraham said unto his young men…”

 

a. Abraham [Strong: 85 ʼAbrâhâm, ab-raw-hawm'; contracted from H1 and an unused root (probably meaning to be populous); father of a multitude; Abraham, the later name of Abram:—Abraham.


b. said [Strong: 559 ʼâmar, aw-mar'; a primitive root; to say (used with great latitude):—answer, appoint, avouch, bid, boast self, call, certify, challenge, charge, (at the, give) command(-ment), commune, consider, declare, demand, × desire, determine, × expressly, × indeed, × intend, name, × plainly, promise, publish, report, require, say, speak (against, of), × still, × suppose, talk, tell, term, × that is, × think, use (speech), utter, × verily, × yet.]

2. “…Abide ye here with the ass; I and the lad will go yonder and worship…”

3. “…and come again to you.”

1). This statement was a powerful faith statement. It was not said with a thought that God or he would not go through with it, rather he believed he would. Abraham was a prophet.

 

a). Genesis 20:7 “Now therefore restore the man his wife; for he is a prophet, and he shall pray for thee, and thou shalt live…”

 

2). In repeated rhema words from God, God spoke to Abraham. Speaking broadly at first then narrowing it down, God consistently told Abraham of millions of decendants.

 

a). Genesis 12:2 “And I will make of thee a great nation…”

 

b). Genesis 12:7 “…Unto thy seed will I give this land…”

 

c). Genesis 13:15 “For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever.”

 

d). Genesis 15:5 And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be.

 

3). The incident of sleeping with Hagar with Ishmael the result was never God’s will. However because God is God he was and is able to work through the debacle, no matter how severe. Because of Ishmael now being in the mix so to speak, God then narrowed the seed covenant through Sarah to Isaac.

 

a). Genesis 17:15, 16 And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be.

17:16 And I will bless her, and give thee a son also of her: yea, I will bless her, and shee shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall be of her.

 

b). Genesis 17:19 And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and shou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him.

 

4). The statement from Jesus that Abraham saw his day is an indication he received a vision of Christ’s day. Which meant that Isaac eventually had children and grandchildren and great grandchildren and eventually the Messiah Jesus was born.

 

a). John 8:56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad.

 

5). With all this in his heart Abraham actually believed that if he went through with the burnt offering, God would raise Isaac from the dead.

 

a). Hebrews 11:17-19 By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that received the promises offered up his only begotten son,

11:18 Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called:

11:19 Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure.

 

b). In the mind of Abraham, Isaac was already dead. This is was is meant by the phrase, “…from the dead; from whence he also received him in a figure.”

 

c). [NASB] “…from the dead; from which he also received back as a type.”

 

d). [Amplified Bible] “Indeed in the sense that Isaac was figuratively dead, potentially sacrificed, he did actually receive him back from the dead.”

 

6). Only two individuals are referred to in Scripture as “only begotten”, Isaac, in Hebrews 11:17; and Jesus in John 1:14, 18; 3:16, 18; 1 John 4:9.
