Genesis 21:11

And the thing was very grievous in Abraham's sight because of his son.

a. NLT: This upset Abraham very much because Ishmael was his son.

b. NIV: The matter distressed Abraham greatly because it concerned his son.

c. YLT: And the thing is very wrong in the eyes of Abraham, for his son's sake;

1. “And the thing was very grievous in Abraham's sight because of his son.”

a. c. grievous [3415 * yara’] [Strong: a primitive root; properly, to be broken up (with any violent action) i.e. (figuratively) to fear:--be grevious (only Isa. 15:4; the rest belong to 7489).

d. in Abrahama’s [85 * ‘Abraham] [Strong: contracted from 1 and an unused root (probably meaning to be populous); father of a multitude; Abraham, the later name of Abram:--Abraham.]

1). Abraham loved Ishmael very much. When God appeared to Abraham to renew the Covenant and spoke how he would have a son through Sarah, who be the seed of the Covenant. Abraham despartely wanted Ismael to be included in God’s blessing, and God rewponded graciously, but he made it clear to Abraham. The Covenant blessing would go to Isaac.

a). Genesis 17:15-21 And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be.

17:16 And I will bless her, and give thee a son also of her: yea, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall be of her.

17:17 Then Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born unto him that is an hundred years old? and shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear?

17:18 And Abraham said unto God, O that Ishmael might live before thee!

17:19 And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him.

17:20 And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee: Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation.

17:21 But my covenant will I establish with Isaac, which Sarah shall bear unto thee at this set time in the next year.
