Genesis 21:31

Genesis 21:31

Wherefore he called that place Beersheba; because there they sware both of them.

a. NLT: Then he named the place Beersheba (which means “well of the oath”), because that was where they had sworn the oath.

b. NIV: So that place was called Beersheba, because the two men swore an oath there.

c. YLT: therefore hath he called that place 'Beer-Sheba,' for there have both of them sworn.

d. Amplified Bible: Therefore that place was called Beersheba (Well of the Oath or Well of the Seven), because there the two of them swore an oath.

e. Septuagint: Therefore he named the name of that place, The Well of the Oath, for there they both swore.

f. Stone Edition Torah/Prophets/Writings: Therefore that place was called Beer-sheba because there the two took an oath.

1. “Wherefore he called that place Beersheba…”

a. Wherefore he called [7121 * qara'] [Strong: a primitive root (rather identical with 7122 through the idea of accosting a person met); to call out to (i.e. properly, address by name, but used in a wide variety of applications):--bewray (self), that are bidden, call (for, forth, self, upon), cry (unto), (be) famous, guest, invite, mention, (give) name, preach, (make) proclaim(- ation), pronounce, publish, read, renowned, say.]

b. that place [4725 * maqowm or maqom also (feminine) mqowmah or mqomah] [Strong:  from 6965; properly, a standing, i.e. a spot; but used widely of a locality (general or specific); also (figuratively) of a condition (of body or mind):--country, X home, X open, place, room, space, X whither(-soever).]

c. Beer-sheba [884 * B'er Sheba`] [Strong: from 875 and 7651 (in the sense of 7650); well of an oath; Beer-Sheba, a place in Palestine:--Beer-shebah.]

2. “…because there they sware both of them.”

a. because there they sware [7650 *  shaba`] [Strong: a primitive root; propr. to be complete, but used only as a denominative from 7651; to seven oneself, i.e. swear (as if by repeating a declaration seven times):--adjure, charge (by an oath, with an oath), feed to the full (by mistake for 7646), take an oath, X straitly, (cause to, make to) swear.]

b. both of them [8147 * shnayim] [Strong: dual of 8145; feminine shttayim {shet-tah'-yim}; two; also (as ordinal) twofold:--both, couple, double, second, twain, + twelfth, + twelve, + twenty (sixscore) thousand, twice, two.]
