Acts 7:29

Then fled Moses at this saying, and was a stranger in the land of Madian, where he begat two sons.

a. NLT: When Moses heard that, he fled the country and lived as a foreigner in the land of Midian. There his two sons were born.

b. NIV: When Moses heard this, he fled to Midian, where he settled as a foreigner and had two sons.

c. YLT: 'And Moses fled at this word, and became a sojourner in the land of Midian, where he begat two sons,

d. Amplified Bible: At that reply Moses sought safety by flight and he was an exile and an alien in the country of Midian, where he became the father of two sons.

1. “Then fled Moses at this saying…”

a. Then [1161 * de] [Strong:  a primary particle (adversative or continuative); but, and, etc.:--also, and, but, moreover, now (often unexpressed in English).]

b. fled [5343 * pheugo] [Strong: apparently a primary verb; to run away (literally or figuratively); by implication, to shun; by analogy, to vanish:--escape, flee (away).]

c. Moses [3475 * Moseus] [Strong: of Hebrew origin; (4872); Moseus, Moses, or Mouses (i.e. Mosheh), the Hebrew lawgiver:--Moses.]

1). Looking at this verse and the verses in Exodus it appears that Moses fled Egypt from Pharaoh in fear.

a). Exodus 2:14, 15  And he said, Who made thee a prince and a judge over us? intendest thou to kill me, as thou killedst the Egyptian? And Moses feared, and said, Surely this thing is known.

2:15 Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to slay Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and dwelt in the land of Midian: and he sat down by a well.

2). But Scripture clearly declares that Moses left Egypt in faith and not because he was afraid of the wrath of Pharaoh. So God told him to leave Egypt.

a). Hebrews 11:27 By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible.

2. “…and was a stranger in the land of Madian…”

f. of Madian [3099 * Madian] [Strong: of Hebrew origin (4080); Madian (i.e. Midian), a region of Arabia:--Madian.]

1). Midian is in present day Saudi Arabia. This is the true location of Mount Sinai, not in the Sinai Peninsula.

a). Galatians 4:25  For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children.

2). This part of Moses life in covered in early Exodus. After leaving Egypt he went to Midian and stayed for forty years

a). Exodus 2:15-22 Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to slay Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and dwelt in the land of Midian: and he sat down by a well.

2:16 Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters: and they came and drew water, and filled the troughs to water their father's flock.

2:17 And the shepherds came and drove them away: but Moses stood up and helped them, and watered their flock.

2:18 And when they came to Reuel their father, he said, How is it that ye are come so soon to day?

2:19 And they said, An Egyptian delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds, and also drew water enough for us, and watered the flock.

2:20 And he said unto his daughters, And where is he? why is it that ye have left the man? call him, that he may eat bread.

2:21 And Moses was content to dwell with the man: and he gave Moses Zipporah his daughter.

2:22 And she bare him a son, and he called his name Gershom: for he said, I have been a stranger in a strange land.

3. “…where he begat two sons.”

b. he begat [1080 * gennao] [Strong: from a variation of 1085; to procreate (properly, of the father, but by extension of the mother); figuratively, to regenerate:--bear, beget, be born, bring forth, conceive, be delivered of, gender, make, spring.]

c. two [1417 * duo] [Strong:  a primary numeral; "two":--both, twain, two.]

d. sons [5207 * huios] [Strong: apparently a primary word; a "son" (sometimes of animals), used very widely of immediate, remote or figuratively, kinship:--child, foal, son.]

1). Moses two sons with Zipporah.

a). Exodus 18:1-6 When Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses' father in law, heard of all that God had done for Moses, and for Israel his people, and that the Lord had brought Israel out of Egypt;

18:2 Then Jethro, Moses' father in law, took Zipporah, Moses' wife, after he had sent her back,

18:3 And her two sons; of which the name of the one was Gershom; for he said, I have been an alien in a strange land:

18:4 And the name of the other was Eliezer; for the God of my father, said he, was mine help, and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh:

18:5 And Jethro, Moses' father in law, came with his sons and his wife unto Moses into the wilderness, where he encamped at the mount of God:

18:6 And he said unto Moses, I thy father in law Jethro am come unto thee, and thy wife, and her two sons with her.
