Genesis 21:20

Genesis 21:20

And God was with the lad; and he grew, and dwelt in the wilderness, and became an archer.

a. NLT: And God was with the boy as he grew up in the wilderness. He became a skillful archer,

b. NIV: God was with the boy as he grew up. He lived in the desert and became an archer.

c. YLT: and God is with the youth, and he groweth, and dwelleth in the wilderness, and is an archer;

d. Amplified Bible: And God was with the youth, and he developed; and he dwelt in the wilderness and became an archer.

1. “And God was with the lad…”

a. And God [430 * 'elohiym] [Strong: plural of 433; gods in the ordinary sense; but specifically used (in the plural thus, especially with the article) of the supreme God; occasionally applied by way of deference to magistrates; and sometimes as a superlative:--angels, X exceeding, God (gods)(-dess, -ly), X (very) great, judges, X mighty.]

b. was with the lad [5288 * na`ar] {Strong: from 5287; (concretely) a boy (as active), from the age of infancy to adolescence; by implication, a servant; also (by interch. of sex), a girl (of similar latitude in age):--babe, boy, child, damsel (from the margin), lad, servant, young (man).]

2. “…and he grew, and dwelt in the wilderness, and became an archer.”

a. and he grew [1431 *  gadal] [Strong: a primitive root; properly, to twist (Compare 1434), i.e. to be (causatively make) large (in various senses, as in body, mind, estate or honor, also in pride):--advance, boast, bring up, exceed, excellent, be(-come, do, give, make, wax), great(-er, come to...estate, + things), grow(up),increase, lift up, magnify(-ifical), be much set by, nourish (up), pass, promote, proudly (spoken), tower.]

b. and dwelt [3427 * yashab] [Strong: a primitive root; properly, to sit down (specifically as judge. in ambush, in quiet); by implication, to dwell, to remain; causatively, to settle, to marry:--(make to) abide(-ing), continue, (cause to, make to) dwell(-ing), ease self, endure, establish, X fail, habitation, haunt, (make to) inhabit(-ant), make to keep (house), lurking, X marry(-ing), (bring again to) place, remain, return, seat, set(- tle), (down-)sit(-down, still, -ting down, -ting (place) -uate), take, tarry.]

c. in the wilderness [4057 * midbar] [Strong: from 1696 in the sense of driving; a pasture (i.e. open field, whither cattle are driven); by implication, a desert; also speech (including its organs):--desert, south, speech, wilderness.]

1). The “wilderness” is defined in the next verse as in Paran.

d. and became an archer [7235 * rabah] [Strong: a primitive root; to increase (in whatever respect):--(bring in) abundance (X -antly), + archer (by mistake for 7232), be in authority, bring up, X continue, enlarge, excel, exceeding(-ly), be full of, (be, make) great(-er, -ly, X -ness), grow up, heap, increase, be long, (be, give, have, make, use) many (a time), (any, be, give, give the, have) more (in number), (ask, be, be so, gather, over, take, yield) much (greater, more), (make to) multiply, nourish, plenty(-eous), X process (of time), sore, store, thoroughly, very.]

e. an archer [7199 * qashshath] [Strong: intensive (as denominative) from 7198; a bowman:--X archer.]
