Edition Torah/Prophets/Writings: So Abraham took flocks of cattle and gave them
to Abimelech; and the two of them entered into a covenant.
1. “And Abraham took sheep and
oxen, and gave them unto Abimelech…”
a. And Abraham
[85 * 'Abraham] [Strong: contracted from 1 and an unused root
(probably meaning to be populous); father of a multitude; Abraham, the later
name of Abram:--Abraham.]
b. took [3947
* laqach] [Strong: a primitive root; to take (in the widest variety of
applications):--accept, bring, buy, carry away, drawn, fetch, get, infold, X
many, mingle, place, receive(-ing), reserve, seize, send for, take (away, -ing,
up), use, win.]
c. sheep [6629
* tso'n or tsaown (Psalm 144:13) {tseh-one'}] [Strong: from an unused root
meaning to migrate; a collective name for a flock (of sheep or goats); also
figuratively (of men):--(small) cattle, flock (+ -s), lamb (+ -s),
sheep((-cote, -fold, -shearer, -herds)).]
d. and oxen
[1241 * baqar] [Strong: from 1239; beef cattle or an animal of the ox
family of either gender (as used for plowing); collectively, a herd:-- beeve,
bull (+ -ock), + calf, + cow, great (cattle), + heifer, herd, kine, ox.]
e. and gave
[5414 * nathan] [Strong: a primitive root; to give, used with greatest latitude
of application (put, make, etc.):--add, apply, appoint, ascribe, assign, X
avenge, X be ((healed)), bestow, bring (forth, hither), cast, cause, charge,
come, commit, consider, count, + cry, deliver (up), direct, distribute, do, X
doubtless, X without fail, fasten, frame, X get, give (forth, over, up), grant,
hang (up), X have, X indeed, lay (unto charge, up), (give) leave, lend, let
(out), + lie, lift up, make, + O that, occupy, offer, ordain, pay, perform,
place, pour, print, X pull , put (forth), recompense, render, requite, restore,
send (out), set (forth), shew, shoot forth (up), + sing, + slander, strike,
(sub-)mit, suffer, X surely, X take, thrust, trade, turn, utter, + weep, +
willingly, + withdraw, + would (to) God, yield.]
f. Abimelech [40
* 'Abiymelek] [Strong: from 1 and 4428; father of (the) king;
Abimelek, the name of two Philistine kings and of two Israelites:--Abimelech.]
2. “…and both of them made a
covenant.”
a. and both of
them [8147 * shnayim] [Strong: dual of 8145; feminine shttayim
{shet-tah'-yim}; two; also (as ordinal) twofold:--both, couple, double, second,
twain, + twelfth, + twelve, + twenty (sixscore) thousand, twice, two.]
b. made [3772
* karath] [Strong: a primitive root; to cut (off, down or asunder); by
implication, to destroy or consume; specifically, to covenant (i.e. make an
alliance or bargain, originally by cutting flesh and passing between the
pieces):--be chewed, be con-(feder-)ate, covenant, cut (down, off), destroy,
fail, feller, be freed, hew (down), make a league ((covenant)), X lose, perish,
X utterly, X want.]
c. a covenant
[1285 * briyth] [Strong: from 1262 (in the sense of cutting (like 1254));
a compact (because made by passing between pieces of flesh):--confederacy,
(con-)feder(-ate), covenant, league.]
1). There are other
instances where Abraham was in covenant. The Hebrew words karath briyth suggest they cut a covenant. This is previously
mentioned in Genesis 15 and Jeremiah 34. In the cutting of a covenant the
animal or animals are cut in half and the covenant parties pass through the
parts of the animal declaring with uplifted hand what part of the covenant they
will perform.
a). Genesis 15:9-18 And he said unto him, Take me
an heifer of three years old, and a she goat of three years old, and a ram of
three years old, and a turtledove, and a young pigeon.
15:10 And he took
unto him all these, and divided them in the midst, and laid each piece one
against another: but the birds divided he not.
15:11 And when
the fowls came down upon the carcases, Abram drove them away.
15:12 And when
the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and, lo, an horror of
great darkness fell upon him.
15:13 And he
said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land
that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four
hundred years;
15:14 And also
that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come
out with great substance.
15:15 And thou
shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old age.
15:16 But in
the fourth generation they shall come hither again: for the iniquity of the
Amorites is not yet full.
15:17 And it
came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a smoking
furnace, and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces.
15:18 In the
same day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed
have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river
Euphrates:
b). Jeremiah
34:18 And I will give the men that have transgressed my covenant, which have
not performed the words of the covenant which they had made before me, when
they cut the calf in twain, and passed between the parts thereof,
