Matthew 4:2

Matthew 4:2

And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.

a. ASV: And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he afterward hungered. 

b. YLT: And having fasted forty days and forty nights, afterwards he did hunger.

c. Classic Amplified: And He went without food for forty days and forty nights, and later He was hungry.

1. “And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights…”

a. And [Strong: 2532. kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

b. [when he had] fasted [Strong: 3522. nesteuo nace-tyoo'-o from 3523; to abstain from food (religiously):--fast.]

c. forty [Strong: 5062. tessarakonta tes-sar-ak'-on-tah the decade of 5064; forty:--forty.]

d. days [Strong: 2250. hemera hay-mer'-ah feminine (with 5610 implied) of a derivative of hemai (to sit; akin to the base of 1476) meaning tame, i.e. gentle; day, i.e. (literally) the time space between dawn and dark, or the whole 24 hours (but several days were usually reckoned by the Jews as inclusive of the parts of both extremes); figuratively, a period (always defined more or less clearly by the context):--age, + alway, (mid-)day (by day, (-ly)), + for ever, judgment, (day) time, while, years.]

2. “...he was afterward an hungred.”

a. [he was] afterward [Strong: 5305. husteron hoos'-ter-on neuter of 5306 as adverb; more lately, i.e. eventually:--afterward, (at the) last (of all).]

b. [an] hungred [Strong: 3983. peinao pi-nah'-o from the same as 3993 (through the idea of pinching toil; "pine"); to famish (absolutely or comparatively); figuratively, to crave:--be an hungered.]

1). The second set of the Commandments were written by Moses, and he fasted for forty days and forty nights. When the first set were given it says that moses was there forty days and forty nights but it does not say that he fasted (Exodus 24:18).

a). Exodus 34:27, 28  And the LORD said unto Moses, Write thou these words: for after the tenor of these words I have made a covenant with thee and with Israel.
34:28 And he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water. And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the ten commandments.

2). Elijah fasted forty days and forty nights. 

a). 1 Kings 19:7, 8 And the angel of the LORD came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee.
19:8 And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God.
