Matthew 4:3

Matthew 4:3

And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.

a. ASV: And the tempter came and said unto him, If thou art the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.

b. YLT: And the Tempter having come to him said, ‘If Son thou art of God — speak that these stones may become loaves.’

c. Classic Amplified: And the tempter came and said to Him, If You are God’s Son, command these stones to be made loaves of] bread.

1. “And when the tempter came to him…”

a. And [Strong: 2532. kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

b. [when] 1488. ei i second person singular present of 1510; thou art:--art, be.

c. tempter [Strong: 3985. peirazo pi-rad'-zo from 3984; to test (objectively), i.e. endeavor, scrutinize, entice, discipline:--assay, examine, go about, prove, tempt(-er), try.]

1). This is none other than Satan the devil. Jesus identifies him for us.

a). Matthew 4:10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

2). Though it was the Spirit of God that led Christ Jesus into the wilderness lto be tempted, God is never or ever has been a tempter.

a). James 1:13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:

2. “...he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.”

e. Son [Strong: 5207. huios hwee-os' apparently a primary word; a "son" (sometimes of animals), used very widely of immediate, remote or figuratively, kinship:--child, foal, son.]

g. command [Strong: 2036. epo ep'-o a primary verb (used only in the definite past tense, the others being borrowed from 2046, 4483, and 5346); to speak or say (by word or writing):--answer, bid, bring word, call, command, grant, say (on), speak, tell.]

h. that [Strong: 2443. hina hin'-ah probably from the same as the former part of 1438 (through the demonstrative idea; compare 3588); in order that (denoting the purpose or the result):--albeit, because, to the intent (that), lest, so as, (so) that, (for) to.]
i. these [Strong: 3778. houtos hoo'-tos, including nominative masculine plural houtoi hoo'-toy, nominative feminine singular haute how'-tay, and nominative feminine plural hautai how'-tahee from the article 3588 and 846; the he (she or it), i.e. this or that (often with article repeated):--he (it was that), hereof, it, she, such as, the same, these, they, this (man, same, woman), which, who.]

j. stones [Strong: 3037. lithos lee'-thos apparently a primary word; a stone (literally or figuratively):--(mill-, stumbling-)stone.]

k. l. bread [Strong: 740. artos ar'-tos from 142; bread (as raised) or a loaf:--(shew-)bread, loaf.]
