1 Timothy 1:10
For whoremongers, for them that defile them selves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;
a. NLT: The law is for people who are sexually immoral, or who practice homosexuality, or are slave traders, liars, promise breakers, or who do anything else that contradicts the wholesome teaching.
b. NIV: for the sexually immoral, for those practicing homosexuality, for slave traders and liars and perjurers—and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine.
c. YLT: whoremongers, sodomites, men-stealers, liars, perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that to sound doctrine is adverse,
d. Amplified Bible: [For] impure and immoral persons, those who abuse themselves with men, kidnapers, liars, perjurers—and whatever else is opposed to wholesome teaching and sound doctrine.
e. Worrell Translation: For fornicators, for sodomites, for manstealers, for liars, for false swearers; and whatever else is contrary to healthful teaching;
f. Wuest Translation: For whoremongers, for sodomites, for slave dealers and kidnapers, for liars, for perjurers, and if, as is the case, there is anything of a different nature which is opposed to sound teaching.
g. Peshitta Eastern Text: For whoremongers, for those who defile themselves with mankind, for kidnappers of well-born sons, for liars, for perjurers, and for whatever is contrary to sound doctrine.
1. “For whoremongers…”
a. For whoremonger [Strong: 4205 pornos por'-nos; to sell; a male prostitute, a debauchee, fornicator, whoremonger.] [Zodhiates: to sell, which is from perao (n.f.), to pass through, carry over (particularly as merchants) and thence to sell, which in the N.T. appears piprasko (4097). A whoremonger or male prostitute.] [Thayer: a man who prostitutes his body to another’s lust for hire, a male prostitute.] [Vines: denotes a man who indulges in fornication.] [Bullinger: a sodomite, a catamite.]
1). Four of the five Greek Dictionaries that I have define the word as a homosexual prostitute. On a side note, this Greek word is where we get the prefix to the compound English word, pornography. Actually the word graph is also of Greek orgin.
2. “…for them that defile themselves with mankind…”
a. them that defile themselves with mankind [Strong: 733 arsenokoites ar-sen-ok-oy'-tace; from 730 and 2845; a sodomite:--abuser of (that defile) self with mankind.] [Zodhiates: arsen-a male; koite-a bed; a man who lies in bed with another male, a homosexual.] [James B. De Young, Professor of NT, Western Conservative Baptist Seminary: “Paul coined the term arsenkoitai, deriving it from the LXX translation of Leviticus 20:13 (cf. 18:22) and using it for homosexual orientation and behavior, the latter of which should be an occasion for church discipline (1 Corinthians 5-6), and legislation in society (1 Timothy 1:8-11).”] [Thayer: one who lies with a male as with a female, sodomite, homosexual.]
1). In the beginning of our republic, the framers of the Constitution never intended for that document to protect the right to engage in homosexual acts. We know this by using simple common sense: If committing an act is against the law, it is not possible to give someone a right to commit that act. In Bowers v. Hardwick, the 1986 Supreme Court decision that upheld state laws that prohibited homosexual sodomy, Bryon White, writing for the majority said, “Sodomy was a criminal offense at common law and was forbidden by the laws of the original 13 states when they ratified the Bill of Rights…In fact, until 1961, all 50 states outlawed sodomy…” This is such a prophetic development. When our nation started, homosexual behavior was forbidden in every state and up until 1961 in all 50 states, homosexual behavior was against the law. Now remember, the Apostle Paul writing under the inspiration of the Holy Ghost, wrote that such laws were “according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God”. They were “sound doctrine.” Then here we are in 2017, 56 years later, not only is homosexual behavior a protected right, but so is homosexual marriage. Jesus is coming soon.
2). In 1961 Illinois became the first state to drop its sodomy laws. Between then and 2003 there was a relentless effort by individuals and groups to repeal all sodomy laws until by the time Lawrence v. Texas came about in 2003 there was only a small number of states that still had laws on the books to prosecute homosexual behavior. Montana dropped their state ban on homosexual conduct in 1997. The Associated Press reporting on the lifting of the ban said, “Although no one has been prosecuted under the law, a 1993 lawsuit by six homosexuals claimed that gays and lesbians live in fear of being charged with a crime and that takes an emotional and psychological toll.” Romans 13:3 & 4 says, “For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? Do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.” These six people were afraid of the civil authorities because their works were evil. This one of the God ordained purposes for law and civil government. This is what it’s supposed to do. What the state government of Montana did is basically tell God, “Though we are your ministers, we don’t believe homosexuality is evil and we will not execute wrath upon them.”
3. “…for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons…”
a. for menstealers [Strong: 405 andrapodistes an-drap-od-is-tace' from a derivative of a compound of 435 and 4228; an enslaver (as bringing men to his feet):--menstealer.] [Zodhiates: a manstealer, kidnapper, one who steals men to make them slaves or sells them into slavery.]
b. for liars [Strong: 5583 pseustes psyoos-tace' from 5574; a falsifier:--liar.]
c. for perjured persons [Strong: 1965 epiorkos ep-ee'-or-kos from 1909 and 3727; on oath, i.e. (falsely) a forswearer:--perjured person.] [Zodhiates: epi-against; horkos-an oath, a perjurer.]
4. “…and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;”
a. and [Strong: 2532 kai kahee;] apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]
b. if there be any [Strong: 1536 ei tis i tis; from 1487 and 5100; if any:--he that, if a(-ny) man('s thing, from any, ought), whether any, whosoever.]
c. other thing [Strong: 2087 heteros het'-er-os; of uncertain affinity; (an-, the) other or different:--altered, else, next (day), one, (an-)other, some, strange.]
d. that is contrary [Strong: 480 antikeimai an-tik'-i-mahee; to lie opposite, i.e. be adverse (figuratively, repugnant) to:--adversary, be contrary, oppose.] [Zodhiates: anti-against; keimai-to be placed, to lie.] [Zodhiates: to oppose.] [Thayer: to be set over against, opposite to, to oppose, be adverse to, withstand.]
e. to sound [Strong: 5198 in body); figuratively, to be uncorrupt (true in doctrine):--be in health, (be safe and) sound, (be) whole(-some).] [Zodhiates: to be healthy, sound, physically well. (English: hygiene.)]
1). Paul is referring to behaviors that are contrary to healthy teaching. Paul mentions 14 behaviors but clearly says there are others.
2). Paul’s use of hugiaino/sound in 1 & 2 Timothy and Titus.
a). 1 Timothy 6:3 If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;
b). 2 Timothy 1:13 Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
c). Titus 1:9 Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.
d). Titus 1:13 This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith;
e). Titus 2:1 But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:
f). Titus 2:2 That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience.
f. doctrine [Strong: 1319 didaskalia did-as-kal-ee'-ah; from 1320; instruction (the function or the information):--doctrine, learning, teaching.]
1). One of the messages the Apostle Paul is saying in these verses, is that laws that forbid sinful behavior, such as lying, murder, kidnapping, and homosexuality are “good” and “sound doctrine”. Did you get that? Laws that forbid murder, lying, kidnapping, and homosexuality are sound doctrine. The definitions of the words Paul uses are important to our present time in light of the warning Paul writes in his second epistle to Timothy.
a). 2 Timothy 4:2-4 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but after their own lusts will they heap to themselves teachers having itching ears;
4:4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
b). The Apostle Paul warns that the time was coming when some in the church would no longer believe sound doctrine, in this case, laws that forbid homosexual lust and behavior. He warned that they would gather around and listen to teachers who accommodate this lust. There are denominations out there that proclaim homosexuality to be simply one of the varied orientations that make up human sexuality. They desire to have their ears tickled. They have turned away their ears from hearing the truth of the word of God concerning homosexuality and turn away to listen to myths, fairy tales, rather than God’s word.
2). During the late 70’s, various news organizations began to report how the old mainline denominations’ were struggling over the issue of homosexuality. When I began to see these denominations compromise again and again over this issue, I would wonder, “What in the world is going on? Don’t they know what the Bible says?” One factor that I was not aware at the time was that a perverted theology had infiltrated the ranks of these denominations. It was a heresy that reinterpreted clear scriptural teaching about homosexuality into bizarre doctrine which taught that Christianity and homosexuality are compatible; this heresy is homosexual theology. Looking at the growth of the homosexual movement in the church world in the last 25 years we can see the heretical has now become accepted. It is a profanity laced false doctrine that will eat away a healthy Christian foundation similar to disease eating away healthy flesh. It fits perfectly the warning Paul gave in his second letter to Timothy.
a). 2 Timothy 2:16-18 But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.
2:17 And their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus;
2:18 Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some.
3). Let me point out that “theology” is the wrong term to use with this particular heresy. Theology is the study of God, and the teaching that homosexuality and Christianity are compatible is not about God. It is about man’s attempt to incorporate vile affection, vile lusts into a pseudo-relationship with God. Perhaps a more accurate term would be “sodomology”. This heresy is not theology. The preachers in these churches preaching this poison are apostate; they are fallen away if they were ever born again. I must say not every minister in these denominations is preaching this garbage; there are many godly men and women within these denominations trying to stand for truth, but for the most part, within the last 35 years sodomology has crept into these churches and has caused them to depart from the faith. It was these developments and studying the Scriptures that foretold of these events led me to believe as Christ’s return came closer homosexuality was only going to become a larger, more prominent issue in the church and the world. Just as Jesus said in Luke 17:28-30, “Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded; But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom, it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all. Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed.” A common thread in sodomology is the accusation that the writers of Scripture were ignorant of what we know today about sexual orientation, so what the Scriptures say about homosexuality does not apply because the authors didn’t have all the facts.
a). Human Sexuality, Evangelical Luthern Church in America, 10/94: “Some of those who have called for change have claimed that what the Scriptures say about homosexual behavior should no longer be binding on the Church. They have pointed out that the Church has changed its understanding of the Scriptures before. They have claimed the Bible is conditioned by its time—it does not and can not address contemporary understandings of homosexuality and the authentic relationship of gay and lesbian persons who are Christians. Others calling for change have insisted that the Scripture passages that seem to condemn same-sex acts have not been correctly understood. They have argued that the Scripture passages address only homosexual behavior and did not know the concept of “sexual orientation”.
b). The Episcopal Church in their study, Continuing the Dialogue, echoes this lie by saying that it is “unlikely” the Apostle Paul knew about “what we today call” homosexual orientation.
4). These deceitful statements completely contradict what the Bible says about itself. The warnings written by Paul almost 2000 years ago and cited in the beginning of this chapter are being fulfilled before our very eyes. Concerning the scope and range of authority of the Scriptures Paul was very clear.
a). 2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.
b). Scripture concerning homosexuality is God-breathed and is for doctrine about homosexuality, reproof concerning homosexuality, correction concerning homosexuality, and instruction concerning homosexuality.
5). The effects of sodomology on the United Presbyterian Church in the United States of America, (UPCUSA), true to the warning of Paul in 2 Timothy 2:16-8 is borne out in the following notes.
a). The 1978 General Assembly of the (UPCUSA) characterized “the practice of homosexuality as sin and instructs that unrepentant homosexual practice does not accord with the constitutional requirements for ordination.”
b). 26 Years later in 2004 the General Assemble of the UPCUSA said this. “The 216th General Assembly (2004) recognizes that within our denomination, people of good character and principle differ in their understanding of human sexuality, and in those differences we are called to exercise mutual forbearance toward each other…The 216th General Assembly (2004) reminds the church that freedom of conscience with respect to the interpretation of Scripture is to be maintained…The 216th General Assembly (2006) declares that no further force or effect shall be given to the statement of definitive guidance by the 190th General Assembly (1978) of the United Presbyterian Church in the United States of America (UPCUSA) that characterizes the practice of homosexuality as sin and instructs that unrepentant homosexual practice does not accord with the constitutional requirements for ordination…The 216th General Assembly (2004) declares that no further force or effect shall be given to the interpretation of the 119th General Assembly (1979) of the Presbyterian Church in the United States (PCUS) that states “homosexuality falls short of God’s plan.”…The 216th General Assembly (2004) declares that subsequent General Assembly statements that affirmed the 1978 and 1979 guidance on homosexuality and ordination shall be given no further force or effect.
6). The above quotes from the Episcopal, Lutheran, and the United Presbyterian Church in the United States of America are clear examples of 2 Timothy 4:3 & 4. It is a flashing neon sign pointing to the apostasy of segments of professing Christianity. There are others from other denominations that could also be included, but these are sufficient. What the Scripture requires the Church to do is use the authority that Christ gave the Church to administer discipline. Under the Old Covenant there were certain crimes that were punishable by death. For instance, in Leviticus 20:11 we read, “…the man that lieth with his father’s wife…both of them shall surely be put to death.” It is the same in Deuteronomy 17:2-5 where the crime is idolatry. “If there be found among you…man or woman, that hath…gone and served other gods…Then shalt thou bring forth that man or that woman…and shalt stone them with stones, till they die.” Clearly under the Old Covenant these two offences were guilty of death, but under the New Covenant there is a different discipline given. These two sins are dealt with by the Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 5. But instead of ordering the death penalty Paul says the individuals need to be excommunicated. In 1 Corinthians 5:2 the judgment to be administered is “taken away”, and in 1 Corinthians 5:13 it is “put away”. They are both the same Greek word, exairo, which means “to expel or excommunicate”. The desired effect, according to 1 Corinthians 5:5 is, “To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.” Living in the world out from under the protection of God, and being the targets of the prayers of the saints is sufficient to bring a person to repentance and back into fellowship with God and his Church. Likewise under the law the death penalty was prescribed for individuals guilty of homosexuality.
a). Leviticus 18:22 Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womenkind: it is abomination.
b). Leviticus 20:13 If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.
7). Using the same example of the Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 5 for other sins that were prescribed the death penalty under the law but were under the New Covenant, we can with confidence in the mind of Christ excommunicate those in the local assembly who are unrepentant, but with the hope and prayer that it is only a step in the process of bringing them back into the body for full fellowship after the repentance is accomplished. In light of this, those in the Church who advocate death for homosexuals are, I believe in error and need to repent. The warning is not just about homosexuality, he also mentioned “menstealers”, which when the Greek definition is examined, is exactly what some European nations did to African people, abducting them and forcing them into slavery in America. He also mentioned “manslayers” which is a murderer. In light of that, what kind of justice is it when a murdered, or a “manslayer” sentences his victim to death and our court system turns around and sentences the manslayer to life. Punishment is supposed to be a deterrent to crime, and in this example a “manslayer” is not put to death. Sound doctrine says capital punishment when warranted is good, but in this day and age according to Scripture, sound doctrine would not be believed.
