2 Timothy 1:2

To Timothy, my dearly beloved son: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

a. NLT: I am writing to Timothy, my dear son. May God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord give you grace, mercy, and peace.

b. NIV: To Timothy, my dear son: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

1. “To Timothy, my dearly beloved son…”

a. To Timothy [Strong: 5095 Timotheos tee-moth'-eh-os from 5092 and 2316; dear to God; Timotheus, a Christian:--Timotheus, Timothy.]

b. my dearly beloved [Strong: 27 ag-ap-ay-tos' from 25; beloved:--(dearly, well) beloved, dear.]

c, son [Strong: 5043 teknon tek'-non from the base of 5098; a child (as produced):--child, daughter, son.]

1).Many Bible scholars believe that the Apostle Paul led Timothy to the Lord on his first missionary tour, when Paul was at Lystra in Acts 14:8-20. In the second missionary tour, Timothy was already a disciple, Acts 16:1.

2. “…Grace, mercy, and peace…”

a. Grace [Strong: 5485 charis khar'-ece from 5463; graciousness (as gratifying), of manner or act (abstract or concrete; literal, figurative or spiritual; especially the divine influence upon the heart, and its reflection in the life; including gratitude):--acceptable, benefit, favour, gift, grace(- ious), joy, liberality, pleasure, thank(-s, -worthy).] [Outline of Biblical Usage (a combination of Strong’s, Smith’s Bible Dictionary and Thayer’s Greek Dictionary) : grace, that which affords joy, pleasure, delight, sweetness, charm, loveliness: grace of speech, good will, loving-kindness, favour, of the merciful kindness by which God, exerting his holy influence upon souls, turns them to Christ, keeps, strengthens, increases them in is due to grace, the spiritual condition of one governed by the power of divine grace, the Christian faith, knowledge, affection, and kindles them to the exercise of the Christian virtues, what token or proof of grace, benefit, a gift of grace, benefit, bounty, thanks, (for benefits, services, favours), recompense, reward.]

b. mercy [Strong: 1656 eleos el'-eh-os of uncertain affinity; compassion (human or divine, especially active):--(+ tender) mercy.]

c. peace [Strong: 1515 eirene i-ray'-nay probably from a primary verb eiro (to join); peace (literally or figuratively); by implication, prosperity:--one, peace, quietness, rest, + set at one again.] [Outline of Biblical Usage (a combination of Strong’s, Smith’s Bible Dictionary and Thayer’s Greek Dictionary):  a state of national tranquility exemption from the rage and havoc of war, peace between individuals, i.e. harmony, concord, security, safety, prosperity, felicity, (because peace and harmony make and keep things safe and prosperous), of the Messiah's peace, the way that leads to peace (salvation), of Christianity, the tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ, and so fearing nothing from God and content with its earthly lot, of whatsoever sort that is, the blessed state of devout and upright men after death.]

1). The Apostle Paul began all of his epistles or ended them in a similar manner always using the words grace and peace. Grace and peace to us from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Every time Paul opened his epistle he was saying “grace, that which affords joy, good will, loving-kindness, favour, merciful kindness by which God, exerts His holy influence upon you, turns you to Christ, keeping, strengthening, increasing you in grace, and peace harmony, concord, security, safety, prosperity, felicity, a peace that passes all understanding to you from God our Father and our Lord Jesus Christ.

3. “…from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.”

a. from [Strong: 575 apo apo' a primary particle; "off," i.e. away (from something near), in various senses (of place, time, or relation; literal or figurative):--(X here-)after, ago, at, because of, before, by (the space of), for(-th), from, in, (out) of, off, (up-)on(-ce), since, with. In composition (as a prefix) it usually denotes separation, departure, cessation, completion, reversal, etc.]

b. God [Strong: 2316 os of uncertain affinity; a deity, especially (with 3588) the supreme Divinity; figuratively, a magistrate; by Hebraism, very:--X exceeding, God, god(-ly, -ward).]

c. the Father [Strong: 3962 pater pat-ayr' apparently a primary word; a "father" (literally or figuratively, near or more remote):--father, parent.

d. and [Strong: 2532 kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

e. Christ [Strong: 5547 Christos khris-tos' from 5548; anointed, i.e. the Messiah, an epithet of Jesus:--Christ.]

f. Jesus [Strong: 2424 Iesous ee-ay-sooce' of Hebrew origin (3091); Jesus (i.e. Jehoshua), the name of our Lord and two (three) other Israelites:--Jesus.]

g. our [Strong: 2257 . hemon hay-mone' genitive case plural of 1473; of (or from) us:--our (company), us, we.]

h. Lord [Strong: 2962 kurios koo'-ree-os from kuros (supremacy); supreme in authority, i.e. (as noun) controller; by implication, Master (as a respectful title):-- God, Lord, master, Sir.]
