Acts 13:19


Acts 13:19

And when he had destroyed seven nations in the land of Chanaan, he divided their land to them by lot.

a. NLT: Then he destroyed seven nations in Canaan and gave their land to Israel as an inheritance.

b. NIV: and he overthrew seven nations in Canaan, giving their land to his people as their inheritance.

c. YLT: and having destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, He did divide by lot to them their land.

d. Amplified Bible Classic: When He had destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, He gave them [the Hebrews] their land as an inheritance [distributing it to them by lot; all of which took] about 450 years.

e. Worrell Translation: And, having destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, He distributed by lot their land to them for about four hundred and fifty years.

f. Wuest Translation: And having destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, He divided their land, distributing it by lot among them as an inheritance.

1. “And when he had destroyed seven nations in the land of Chanaan…”

a. And [Strong: 2532 * kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

b. when he had destroyed [Strong: 2507 * kathaireo kath-ahee-reh'-o from 2596 and 138 (including its alternate); to lower (or with violence) demolish (literally or figuratively):--cast (pull, put, take) down, destroy.]

c. seven [Strong: 2033 * hepta hep-tah' a primary number; seven:--seven.]

d. nations [Strong: 1484 * ethnos eth'-nos probably from 1486; a race (as of the same habit), i.e. a tribe; specially, a foreign (non-Jewish) one (usually, by implication, pagan):--Gentile, heathen, nation, people.]

e. in [Strong: 1722 * en en a primary preposition denoting (fixed) position (in place, time or state), and (by implication) instrumentality (medially or constructively), i.e. a relation of rest (intermediate between 1519 and 1537); "in," at, (up-)on, by, etc.:--about, after, against, + almost, X altogether, among, X as, at, before, between, (here-)by (+ all means), for (... sake of), + give self wholly to, (here-)in(-to, -wardly), X mightily, (because) of, (up-)on, (open-)ly, X outwardly, one, X quickly, X shortly, (speedi-)ly, X that, X there(-in, -on), through(-out), (un-)to(-ward), under, when, where(-with), while, with(-in). f. the land [Strong: 1093 * ge ghay contracted from a primary word; soil; by extension a region, or the solid part or the whole of the terrene globe (including the occupants in each application):--country, earth(-ly), ground, land, world.]

g. of Chanaan [Strong: 5477 * Chanaan khan-ah-an' of Hebrew origin (3667); Chanaan (i.e. Kenaan), the early name of Palestine:--Chanaan.]

1). The seven nations are listed in Deuteronomy.

a). Deuteronomy 7:1  When the Lord thy God shall bring thee into the land whither thou goest to possess it, and hath cast out many nations before thee, the Hittites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and mightier than thou;

2.  “…he divided their land to them by lot.”

a. he divided…by lot [Strong: 2624 * kataklerodoteo kat-ak-lay-rod-ot-eh'-o from 2596 and a derivative of a compound of 2819 and 1325; to be a giver of lots to each, i.e. (by implication) to apportion an estate:--divide by lot.]

b. their [Strong: 846 * autos ow-tos' from the particle au (perhaps akin to the base of 109 through the idea of a baffling wind) (backward); the reflexive pronoun self, used (alone or in the comparative 1438) of the third person , and (with the proper personal pronoun) of the other persons:--her, it(-self), one, the other, (mine) own, said, (self-), the) same, ((him-, my-, thy- )self, (your-)selves, she, that, their(-s), them(-selves), there(-at, - by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with), they, (these) things, this (man), those, together, very, which.]

1). The land was divided between the tribes.

a). Joshua 14:1-4  And these are the countries which the children of Israel inherited in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel, distributed for inheritance to them.
14:2 By lot was their inheritance, as the Lord commanded by the hand of Moses, for the nine tribes, and for the half tribe.
14:3 For Moses had given the inheritance of two tribes and an half tribe on the other side Jordan: but unto the Levites he gave none inheritance among them.
14:4 For the children of Joseph were two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim: therefore they gave no  part unto the Levites in the land, save cities to dwell in, with their suburbs for their cattle and for 
their substance.

2). The inheritance of the tribes by lot.

a). Reuben: Joshua 13:15-23

b). Gad: Joshua 13:24-28

c). Manasseh on the east side of Jordan: Joshua 13:29-32; Manasseh on the west side of Jordan: Joshua 17:1-18.

d). Judah: Joshua 15:1-63.

e). Benjamen: Joshua 18:11-28.

f). Simeon: Joshua19:1-9.

g). Zebulon: Joshua 19:10-16.

h). Issachar: Joshua 19:17-23.

i). Ashur: Joshua 19:24-31.

j). Napthtali: Joshua 19:32-39.

k). Dan: Joshua19:40-48.

l). Ephraim: Joshua 16:5-10.

3). The Levites did not get a geographical area as the other tribes did because the LORD God of Israel was their inheritance.

a). Joshua 13:33 But unto the tribe of Levi Moses gave not any inheritance: the Lord God of Israel was their inheritance, as he said unto them.

b). Each tribe though gave a number of cities and suburbs out of their individual inheritance to the Levites. The total number of cities was 48.

c). Joshua 21:1-42.
