Acts 4:29
And
now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with
all boldness they may speak thy word,
1.
“…and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word,”
a. grant [1325 * didomi] [Thayer: to give, to
give something to someone, of one's own accord to give one something, to his
advantage, to bestow a gift
to grant, give to one asking, let have, to
supply, furnish, necessary things, to give over, extend, present, of a writing,
to give over to one's care, intrust, commit, something to be administered, to
give or commit to some one something to be religiously observed, to furnish,
endue, to give, to cause, profuse, give forth from one's self, to give, to appoint to an office, to cause to come
forth,
to give one to someone as his own, as an
object of his saving care, to give one to someone, to return
to grant or permit one, to commission.]
b. boldness [3954 * parresia] [Thayer: freedom
in speaking, unreservedness in speech, openly, frankly, i.e without concealment,
without ambiguity or circumlocution, without the use of figures and comparisons,
free and fearless confidence, cheerful courage, boldness, assurance
the deportment by which one becomes
conspicuous or secures publicity.]
c. This prayer was very specific. They prayed
that God would grant them to speak the word with all boldness. They prayed the
very opposite of what the Sanhedrin commanded them!
