Hebrews
12:18
For ye are not come unto the mount that might be
touched, and that burned with fire, nor unto blackness, and darkness, and
tempest,
a. NLT: You
have not come to a physical mountain, to a place of flaming fire,
darkness, gloom, and whirlwind, as the Israelites did at Mount Sinai.
b. NIV: You
have not come to a mountain that can be touched and that is burning with fire;
to darkness, gloom and storm;
c. YLT: For
ye came not near to the mount touched and scorched with fire, and to blackness,
and darkness, and tempest,
d.
Amplified Bible: For you have not come [as did the Israelites in the
wilderness] to a [material] mountain that can be touched, [a mountain] that is
ablaze with fire, and to gloom and darkness and a raging storm,
e.
Worrell Translation: For ye havenot come
to a mount that is touched and burning with fire, and to blackness, and darkness,
and tempest,
1. “For ye are not come unto the mount that might
be touched…”
a. For [1063
* gar] [Strong: a primary particle; properly, assigning a reason (used in
argument, explanation or intensification; often with other particles):--and,
as, because (that), but, even, for, indeed, no doubt, seeing, then, therefore,
verily, what, why, yet.]
b. ye are…come
[4334 * proserchomai pros-er'-khom-ahee from
4314 and 2064 (including its alternate); to approach, i.e. (literally) come
near, visit, or (figuratively) worship, assent to:--(as soon as he) come
(unto), come thereunto, consent, draw near, go (near, to, unto).]
c. not
[3756 * ou; also (before a vowel) ouk; and (before an aspirate)
ouch] [Strong: a primary word; the
absolute negative (compare 3361) adverb; no or not:--+ long, nay, neither,
never, no (X man), none, (can-)not, + nothing, + special, un(-worthy), when, +
without, + yet but.]
d. unto
the mount [3735 * oros] [Strong: probably from an obsolete oro (to rise or
"rear"; perhaps akin to 142; compare 3733); a mountain (as lifting
itself above the plain): -hill, mount(-ain).]
e. that
might be touched [5584 * pselaphao] [Strong: from the base of 5567 (compare
5586); to manipulate, i.e. verify by contact; figuratively, to search for:--feel
after, handle, touch.]
1). The
writer of Hebrews is distinguishing between the mount that could be touched and
the mount that could not be touched. (See above translations, NLT, Amplified
Bible.) He contrasts the one one earth with heaven.

12:24 And
to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that
speaketh better things than that of Abel.
